Commoning the Neighbourhood: Reappropriating our everyday spaces
In cities around the world, we are witnessing a blossoming of urban commons: initiatives of stewardship and collaboration among active citizens who come together to reclaim urban spaces and resources and transform them into non-commodified structures that serve everyday local needs.
From community gardens to self-managed cultural and social centres, community kitchens and tool libraries, they embody living examples of sharing and co-governing resources, time and knowledge, while simultaneously regenerating neighbourhood spaces.
In this interactive session, Androniki Pappa, architect and researcher specialising in participatory urbanism and urban commons, will first delve into the ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ of neighbourhood commons spaces, sharing inspiring international cases. Then, we will transition to her Commoning the Neighbourhood participatory design game, where we will all navigate the messy realities of collaborative decision-making to reimagine our neighbourhood spaces as commons.
